the scantiness of my resources or the difficulties of my life [...] I know that I worked, from morning until night, with common men and boys, a shabby child. I know that I lounged about the streets, insufficiently and unsatisfactorily fed. I know that, but for the mercy of God, I might easily have been, for any care that was taken of me, a little robber or a little vagabond.” (David Copperfield, 172) Inspired by the novel’s vivid bodily descriptions of travel and twinned indignity and precarity of low-wage work, this project finds their intersection and analog in the bus shelters of Tucson, Arizona. Among over 2,250 bus stops distributed throughout Pima County, an untold and unmarked number of shelters are fabricated by the incarcerated workers of Arizona Correctional Industries.* These bus shelters mark sites where we might begin to view the extreme labor exploitation of individuals in prison alongside quotidian injustices of the low-wage economy, in which invisibilized, essential workers are often reliant on stigmatized public transportation. Through the 19th century visual technology of stereoscopy, I investigate these connections in the built environment and recover the bus shelter as an intimate space for care with a series of stereographs that combine multiple forms of labor to reimagine these spaces and systems. — The Arizona Republic with KJZZ News published a major investigative report into the practices of ACI across the state in July 2022. Situated within Metro’s transportation right-of-way, the project consolidates and leverages publicly-owned land and facilities to position the Valley for growth in a future shaped by climate change and increasing demands on water infrastructure. It establishes a layered development extending nearly two miles along Victory Boulevard, creating an innovative and ambitiously-programmed infrastructure-scaled development. Simultaneous providing management for stormwater runoff and treatment for water reclamation, the project extends and lifts the adjacent park with a planted surface, cresting like a wave, over a new strand of mixed-use DNA injected into the existing urban fabric. The crucial management of potable water and wastewater augments the city’s capacity for continued growth in harmony with investments in public transportation and public systems of infrastructure. The Green New Wave reimagines the interface between the Sepulveda Basin Recreation Area, a crucial regional and infrastructural open space, and its surrounding suburban fabric, with an eye towards Los Angeles’ new climate future. It forms an architecture where density, public transportation, living, working, and community come together to create a new idea of the city. A Book of Plans unfolds in space, decompressing the lines and signs contained within to demarcate small reading rooms and places for conversation. It takes on the project of defining publics in both senses of creating an audience of readership or discourse and creating a public realm of space. The 720 pages of the book use their printed “words” and material physicality to produce a lightweight and flexible definition of space, aligning the book’s form and content. The “plans” within are both metaphorical and concrete—potentials contingent in their realization. The installation gathers associated objects to show how the self-produced book can draw together other things to define a small world, bridging among the one and the many. The playful elementary forms serve as bookcases for the reading room, and they house a personal selection of self-published print matter to demonstrate their importance in calling together various communities, defining both social spaces and spaces of action. The title itself, Micro Public-ation uses a play on words to conflate ideas of publics, public space, and publishing through its key suffix -ation which “forms nouns of action” from verbs (Oxford English Dictionary). It proposes not just “publish” as its verb but “public” as one too, requiring action and taking space. By bringing together familiar words, forms, and spaces in unexpected ways, Micro Public-ation is an investigation of how to create new relationships among people, places, and things—if only for a moment. Using the techniques of filmic sensing and performance art in public space, the event of the ice block’s journey, propelled by human hands, provided a way for the UHI team to investigate the social use and production of space around the lake. Situated in one of the few large parks in Los Angeles, it is instrumental for the health and well-being of Angelenos, and notably so on high-temperature days. It is also a space used by multiple publics, yet with clear but invisible lines of division. The curious movement of the ice block slide through them all, temporarily thawing relationships and helping to map different users, audiences, and reactions in the park. Project completed in collaboration with Hannah Fong (UCLA Urban Planning), Chelsey Smith (UCLA Spanish &amp; Portuguese), and May Wang (UCLA Architecture &amp; Urban Design).
